The Small Parcels Favourite Homestead Pinot Gris commemorates the majestic farm house that graces Marlborough's Awatere Valley in recognition of the beauty of this special site. This was the favorite home of the founding family of the valley, lovingly built between 1885 and 1903.
The majority of the grapes for this wine were selected from our finest parcel of Marlborough Pinot Gris for the 2015 vintage, from the Favourite Vineyard in Awatere Valley. The Favourite Vineyard provides mouthwatering minerality due to the cooling Antarctic winds and silt loam “Papa” soil. This Small Parcel wine is from the vineyard's best block, which we manage to provide lower yields of more concentrated fruit. The Rarangi Vineyard, featuring pea gravel soils, contributed a small portion of the fruit.
A portion of our 2015 vintage were whole bunch pressed with no skin contact, to minimize phenolic pick up. Approximately 30% was fermented in large-format acacia barrels and aged for six months to provide floral aromas and sweet notes of ripe pear and nashi apples.
Color: Light pale straw.
Aroma: Labeled as Pinot Gris, as it's more akin to a richer Alsatian style, six months aging in large Acacia wood barrels provides floral aromas and sweet notes of ripe pear and nashi apples.
Palate: The palate is rich and full with a slight oily texture. This wine is dry and well balanced, with flavors of ripe tree fruits, honeysuckle, and spice.
