Favourite Homestead Pinot Gris

Kim Crawford Favourite Homestead Pinot Gris

The Small Parcels “Favourite Homestead” Pinot Gris commemorates the majestic farm house that graces Marlborough’s Awatere Valley in recognition of the beauty of this special site. This was the favorite home of the founding family of the valley, lovingly built between 1885 and 1903.

We selected our two finest estate-grown parcels of Marlborough Pinot Gris in the 2012 vintage, one from the Favourite Vineyard in Awatere Valley and another from the Rarangi Vineyard in the Wairau Valley. The fruit from the Favourite Vineyard contributes pure aromatic intensity and floral complexity, as well as mouthwatering minerality due to the cooling Antarctic winds and silt loam “Papa” soil. Rarangi provides ripe pear and spicy layers, and the rich viscosity beloved in the finest wines of Alsace due to its more temperate climate and incredibly free-draining “pea-gravel” soils.

Harvested in early April, the mature fruit for our 2012 vintage was gently pressed for finesse, elegance, and a silken texture. We used QA23 yeast to enhance the fruit flavours and provide texture on the palate. Approximately 20% was fermented in large-format Acacia wood barrels and aged on yeast lees for six months to provide floral aromas and sweet notes of honey and spice.

Tasting Notes

Colour: Light pale straw.

Aroma: Labeled as Pinot Gris, as it’s more akin to a richer Alsatian style, this superb wine combines ripe pear and tropical fruit character, along with enticing floral, bright citrus notes and mouthwatering acidity. Six months aging in large Acacia wood barrels adds a beautiful, silky texture to the finish of this delicious wine.

Palate: A rich palate with balanced acidity to retain freshness. flavours of ripe honeysuckle are complemented by notes of spiced apple crumble and pear. The use of specialized yeast, combined with the wood aging, provide the wine with a hint of sweetness and excellent texture.

Cellar: Best enjoyed now - 2016
